Greater Jihad The struggle to make yourself and your society perfectly Muslim, this is the inner struggle with thoughts and desires.

Lesser Jihad The struggle with things outside yourself which might include fighting.

What would make Jihad okay? Self defence Strengthening Islam Protecting the freedom of Muslims to practise their faith Protecting Muslims against oppression, which could include overthrowing tyrannical ruler Punishing an enemy who breaks an oath Putting right what is wrong

What a Jihad is not to do Force people to convert to Islam Conquer other nations to colonise them Take territory for economic gain Settle disputes Demonstrate a leaders power

Going To War Muslims believe that a war can only be fought if it is considered ‘just’ Wars that are ‘just’ must meet certain criteria Muslims believe that Jihad is a just war

Criteria for Just War Just cause It needs to be a last resort Minimum suffering No civilians to be targeted Must be ended as soon as the enemy lays down its arms

Why do they believe this? The Qu’ran says Muslims must fight if they’re being attacked Also says anyone who dies in Jihad will go straight to heaven Muhammed said Muslims must fight in Jihad Muhammed fought in wars – Muslims must follow this They get brain washed

Summary To answer a B question you need 4 clear points, you could include: Muslims are peaceful but will fight to defend faith ‘Fight in the cause of God those who fight you’ ‘Think not of those who are slain in Gods way as dead. Nay, they live, finding their sustenance in the presence of the lord.’
