Objective: SWBAT will describe how bone is formed. SWBAT distinguish between male and female skeletal remains. Do Now: 1. What does this graph tell us? 2. If a victim body temperature is now 23.33 degrees Celsius, approximately how long has the victim been dead?
2
Ossification OsteoblastOsteoclast Osteocytes Layers of bone Bone Formation
3
Ossification- the process of making bones Cartilage is replaced by calcium phosphate to form bone Osteoblast- all bones originate from osteoblast Also responsible for making new bones and repairing damages Osteocytes are mature osteoblast cells that help continue bone formation Osteoclasts – eat away old bone and shape new bone

Different layer of bone The periosteum is a thin membrane that contains nerves and blood vessels that nourish the bone. The next layer is the compact bone(2) it is the solid hard part of the bone. Spongy bone is a mesh-like network of tiny pieces of bone. Spongy bone (3) provides support for the skeletal system (4) Marrow is a soft tissue where blood cells are made.
