Discussion What personal circumstances might prevent someone from using an ordinary mobile phone? How disadvantaged they are as a result? Examples: if they are hard of hearing, visually impaired, working in a challenging environment

In this lesson students are learning about: Specialist mobile phones designed for individuals with particular or special needs

At the end of this lesson students will be able to: explain why some people find it difficult or impossible to use a standard mobile phone select mobile phones that are suitable for individuals with particular or special needs

Accessibility: Mobile phones and the internet are changing the way we communicate. Having the freedom to communicate through a mobile is an essential part of our daily lives, giving us greater independence, flexibility and security. “Accessibility” is making sure that everyone can enjoy and “access” technology. Sometimes for older or disabled customers, finding the right mobile phone or understanding how to use it can be difficult so it is important that manufacturers take these factors into account.

What feature? Look at Personal Profiles.doc. This handout contains the profiles of four individuals who cannot use a standard mobile phone. Using the following website (or a suitable alternative) http://www.o2.co.uk/accessforall/mobilephones http://www.o2.co.uk/accessforall/mobilephones Create a mobile phone spec for each person. What features do you think the phone must have?

Task Find a mobile phone app that is designed for people with a particular or special need and to complete Phone App Table.doc.
