4. Get organized.  Buy a planner or PDA  Put deadlines into your planner  Reread the syllabus when class is over  Mark the book’s Table of Contents with reading dates

5. Open those books early.  Read the catalog for information about your major  Since this area is going to be your area of expertise, go beyond the minimum  List seminal authors  Highlight important concepts  Do not wait to be told to read  Take reading notes

6. Attend class and appear interested.  Take notes in class about the most important information  Follow along in textbooks and notes  Turn off phones, text messaging, or, if you are in a computer lab, do not instant message during class time

7. Listen and contribute and extend ideas.  Get into study groups with like-minded students  Participate as an  Affirmer  Connector to other classes, current events…  Provider of counterpoints  Take experiences abroad or with other language speakers when possible
