4 Why Common Core? Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The Standards are designed to be strong and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy.

5 Math Overview Solve problems add/sub using multiple strategies (starting with 20-up to 1000) Place value with groups and numbers (odd/even, skip counting, representations) Solve problems using time and money (nearest 5 minutes; pennies nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars) Measure/Estimate lengths (inches, feet, meters, and centimeters)

7 Science Summarize the life cycle of animals including: Birth, Developing into an adult, Reproducing, Aging and death Compare life cycles of different animals such as, but not limited to, mealworms, ladybugs, crickets, guppies, or frogs. Remember that organisms differ from or are similar to their parents based on the characteristics of the organism. Field trip: All A Flutter Butterfly Farm

8 Summarize how energy from the sun serves as a source of light that warms the land, air, and water Summarize weather conditions using qualitative and quantitative measures to describe: Temperature, Wind direction, Wind speed, & Precipitation Compare weather patterns that occur over time and relate observable patterns to time of day and time of year. Recognize the tools that scientists use for observing, recording, and predicting weather changes from day to day and during the seasons. Visit from WXII meteorologist

9 Give examples of matter that change from a solid to a liquid and from a liquid to a solid by heating and cooling Compare the amount (volume and weight) of water in a container before and after freezing. Compare what happens to water left in an open container over time as to water left in a closed container. 10 Social Studies Exemplify characteristics of good citizenship through historical figures and everyday figures. Explain why it is important for citizens to participate in their community. Explain how artistic expressions of diverse cultures contribute to the community (stories, art, music, food, etc.). Exemplify respect and appropriate social skills needed for working with diverse groups. Use timelines to show sequencing of events. Identify contributions of historical figures (community, state, nation and world) through various genres.

11 Explain government services and their value to the community. (libraries, schools, parks, etc.) Explain how governments establish order, provide security and create laws to manage conflict. Interpret maps of the school and community that contain symbols, legends, and cardinal directions. Interpret the meaning of symbols and the location of physical and human features on a map (cities, railroads, highways, countries, continents, oceans, etc.). Give examples of ways in which people depend on the physical environment and natural resources to meet basic needs. Explain how people positively and negatively affect the environment.
