Information Literacy Assessment at Chambers Library 2007-2010
2
Environmental Scan >7,000 students in ~300 classes per year Instruction librarians teach >50 classes per year Librarians tailor all classes on a case-by-case basis except the freshman-level Success Central classes Success Central are a standard assignment
3
Environmental Scan, cont. Teach fewer lower level courses, and more upper division and graduate courses. Success Central classes= 1/6 th or more of all our LI classes, or >50 per year LI Feedback Tool has provided excellent data on student perceptions of instruction Spring of 2010 administered SAILS for outcomes based assessment.
4
Library Instruction Feedback: 2007-2010 The demographics have changed in four years Significant increase in upper-division and graduate student participation Significant decrease in lower-division student participation apart from Success Central classes
5
Library Instruction Feedback: 2007-2010, cont. Overall satisfaction with library instruction increased Significant shift from “agree” to “strongly agree” in confidence levels and relevance of instruction Dramatic increase in students who have received library instruction previously
6
SAILS: Standardized Assessment of Information Literacy Skills In the spring of 2010, the UCO Library recruited 553 UCO students to participate in SAILS Education consistently outperformed other disciplines at UCO in Information Literacy skills overall Social Science disciplines were second in overall performance, and Health Sciences underperformed on most skills except documenting sources
7
Summary of UCO student performance by Skill in SAILS 1. Selecting Finding Tools 2. Using Finding Tool Features 3. Retrieving Sources 4. Searching 5. Understanding Economic, Legal, and Social Issues 6. Documenting Sources 7. Developing a Research Strategy 8. Evaluating Sources Best Worst
8
Priorities for the LI Program post SAILS Outreach to underperforming disciplines More emphasis on evaluating sources Outreach campus-wide on plagiarism and using information ethically For the Library Instruction program, most of the data shows that UCO students are on par with peer institutions UCO’s success rate on Selecting Finding Tools might indicate successful classification and navigation to the library’s finding tools Lower scores on Developing a Research Strategy and Evaluating Sources may indicate a need for more emphasis on teaching those skills
