2 Control of the Pacific O After 1898 control of several Pacific Islands gave the U.S. greater influence O Tea was brought into the U.S. from China

3 China O Spheres of Influence- areas where Europe enjoyed special privileges. O U.S. Secretary John Hay felt that the U.S. would be shut out of trade by these European countries O The Open Door Policy will be created- 1899 gave trading rights to all foreign nations in China

4 Boxer Rebellion O In 1900 a rebellion broke out in China by the boxers- a group that opposed Western influence in China O An army with U.S. help shut down this rebellion to protect U.S economic interests

5 Japan O Isolationism- a country’s foreign policy of neutrality. Closed off O In 1853 the U.S. will open up isolationist Japan to western trade by Commodore Matthew Perry O By 1890 Japan had adopted may western culture ways and was the first Asian industrial power O Japan also acquired imperialistic desires

6 Japan cont. O In 1905 Japan will defeat Russia in the Russo-Japanese war O In the same year President Theodore Roosevelt will negotiate a peace treaty between Japan and Russia in the Treaty of Portsmouth. Roosevelt will win the Nobel Peace prize for his efforts
