8 Modeling the Circulatory System 7 th Grade Science Imagine you are a tiny red blood cell. Your job is to deliver oxygen and nutrients to cells in the body and to pick up their carbon dioxide and other wastes. Record the steps of your journey along the way.

10 Modeling the Circulatory System 7 th Grade Science We will begin our journey through the body in the tissues of the gut. The blood picks up the carbon dioxide and other wastes from the cells. We will continue our journey through the capillaries until we make our way to the veins. We will ride through the Inferior Vena Cava, the main vein in the body. The Superior Vena Cava brings blood from the head region of the body, the Inferior Vena Cava from the lower part of the body. Room 405

11 Modeling the Circulatory System 7 th Grade Science Now we are in the heart, it is separated into four sections called chambers. You have just entered the chamber called the right atrium and passed through the tricuspid valve. The valves in the heart keep blood pumping in one direction. Once past the tricuspid valve you enter the right ventricle. During the next beat of the heart, you will make your way through the pulmonary valve and away from the heart by traveling through the blood vessel called the pulmonary artery. Veins carry blood to the heart. Arteries carry blood away from the heart. Next stop, the lungs.

12 Modeling the Circulatory System 7 th Grade Science Now we have arrived in the lungs. Gas exchange occurs in the capillary covered, grape-like structures called the alveoli. The clusters of alveoli allow for a huge surface area for gas exchange. Red blood cells drop off the carbon dioxide waste from the body and pick up the oxygen. Next stop…the heart through the blood vessel we call the pulmonary vein.

13 Modeling the Circulatory System 7 th Grade Science We are back at the heart traveling through the pulmonary vein. This time we arrive through the chamber called the left atrium, flow through the mitral valve and into the left ventricle during the next heart beat. Next we enter the artery called the Aorta and eventually to the arm.

14 Modeling the Circulatory System 7 th Grade Science The blood cells enter the blood vessels and capillaries leading to the arm. It is here in the capillaries that the blood cells deliver oxygen and nutrients, and pick up the cells’ carbon dioxide and other waste. Where is our next stop?

17 Circulatory System Notes 7 th Grade Science 1.The heart is a muscle that pumps blood throughout the body. It is about the size of your fist and will be the size of two fists when you are fully grown. Never stops beating. Beats 100,000 times per day, 35 million times per year and 2.5 billion times in your life. 2000 gallons of blood pumped per day.

18 Circulatory System Notes 7 th Grade Science 2. Veins Take blood to the heart Generally blood in veins is low in oxygen and high in CO 2. The pulmonary vein contains blood that is high in O 2 and low in CO 2.

37 Clean-Up Procedures 7 th Grade Science 1.Place your heart into plastic bag and write your table number and period on the bag. 2.Clean dissection tray 1.Throw away large pieces of tissue in garbage 2.Clean tray with sponge and water. 3.Clean dissection tools. 4.Dry off tools and place them on a paper towel at station. 5.Wipe lab area down with disinfectant wipe.

39 EXIT TICKET 7 th Grade Science Number a note card 1 through 6. Fill in each blank with the correct response. Answer Choices: a.Oxygenated b.Deoxygenated c.Arteries d.Lung e.Capillaries f.Alveoli Veins return __(1)__ blood back to the heart. The heart then pumps the oxygen poor blood to either the right or left __(2)__. There, the blood picks up oxygen and drops off carbon dioxide at the __(3)__. Next, the __(4)__ blood returns back to the heart. The oxygen rich blood is pumped away from the heart through __(5)__.
