October 19, 2015 Objective: I will dissect my CBA to understand the content and format required to succeed on the MSP Entry Task: *Read pages 80-83 *Answer question 1 (pg 83) *Take out Your CBA Agenda: Lesson 5 – Temperature and Density 1) Density CBA - Dissection Online Book Lesson 5

Section 1 – Variables Questions 1-2 1. Which Variable was controlled (kept the same)? B – Temperature of water in hot *Variable(s) that stay the same from one trial to the next. 2. Which variable was manipulated (changed)? D – Density of the liquids in thermometers. *Variable that changes from one trial to the next. Only one manipulated variable per experiment. Also referred to as independent variable.
3
Section 1 – Variables Questions 3-4 3. Which variable was the responding variable? B – Increase in volume of liquids *Variable that is measured in the experiment. Also referred to as dependent variable 4. How could this experiment be more reliable? A- Run more trials *Data is reliable when it’s repeatable

3 Part Conclusion Investigative Question: What is the effect of the density of liquids on the increase in volume of the liquids when heated? Part 1 - Answer The more dense a liquid is, the more the volume increased when heated. OR The lower the density of a liquid, the smaller the increase in volume when heated. Part 2 – Cite/Support (WITH DATA!) When the density of the liquid was.95g/cm3 the volume increased by 1.63ml, the 1.0g/cm3 liquid increased by 1.67ml, and the 1.05g/cm3 liquid increased by 2.15ml. Part 3 – Explain When these 3 liquids were heated to 85 degrees C the most dense liquid ‘s volume increased the most and the least dense liquids volume increased the least.

Final Conclusion The more dense a liquid is, the more the volume increased when heated. When the density of the liquid was.95g/cm3 the volume increased by 1.63ml, the 1.0g/cm3 liquid increased by 1.67ml, and the 1.05g/cm3 liquid increased by 2.15ml. When these 3 liquids were heated to 85 degrees C the most dense liquid ‘s volume increased the most and the least dense liquids volume increased the least.

Energy Transfers Which property of the liquids changed as the liquids heated? C – Density Describe 2 energy transfers that happened during the investigation. 1- Electrical to Thermal (heat) From the wall to the hot pot 2 – Thermal to Kinetic (motion) Heating of liquids results in liquid moving up tube
7
Predictions How was the energy transferred throughout the water in the hot pot? B – Convection Predict the layers… Prediction – When the liquids are dumped into a large beaker, they will settle in order of decreasing density, starting with the least dense on the top. Explanation – This happens because substances with higher densities are heavier than substances with lower densities thus the heaviest, most dense, substance will always sink to the bottom.
