Soap A substance that is used as a cleaner and that dissolves in water
Allows oil and water to form an emulsion Are salts of sodium or potassium and fatty acids, COO- from animal fats or vegetable oils Is an ionic compound COO- group and Na+ or COO- group and K+

Soap Scum Hard water (Mg2+, Ca2+, Fe3+) combines with fatty acids in soap to make soap scum

Detergents A water-soluble cleaner that can emulsify dirt and oil
Are Sodium, Potassium, and Ammonium Salts and fatty acids,SO3- group, from petroleum products Does not make soap scum

Disinfectant A substance that kills bacteria and viruses
Bleach, NaOCl, is a disinfectant Does not remove the substance causing the stain, just makes it colorless Bleaching action is done by the hypochlorite ion, ClO- Never mix bleach with an acid Never mix ammonia and bleach
