1 Assessment without Levels 2015 Meadow Primary School Parents as Partners

2 What is it all about? The Government is changing how children are assessed at Primary School, to set higher standards for education. The National Curriculum has changed and is now more challenging; in addition to this children will be assessed using age-related expectations instead of National Curriculum levels.

3 Why change things? “The new assessment and accountability system for primary schools will set a higher bar. With the continued improvement in teaching and the sharper focus of the new curriculum, results should rise.” Department for Education March 2014

4 What will we assess? Using the National Curriculum subject statements teachers assess children continuously in reading, writing, maths and science just like we used to. For example, all children have weekly guided reading, writing and maths sessions and the teacher will make judgements against the subject statements each week. Children also complete writing assessment tasks every 3 weeks. In Foundation Stage all prime and specific areas are observed and assessed continuously.

5 Foundation Stage This year is the first year of the new Baseline. Introduced by the Government – compulsory by next year Must be completed within the first 6 weeks for all children. This will show the progress made by your child in 2023 – when your child leaves Year 6!

6 How assessments with no levels work Each school can choose its own method. There is no longer a nationally set way. EACH YEAR GROUP TO BE ‘BAND’ Year 1 = Band 1, Year 2 –Band 2 and so on Each Year Band is broken down into 6 steps Minimum Expected progress will be 6 Steps of progress over a year

7 Bands and steps…. Steps: Each year band has been broken down into six steps: beginning (b) beginning + (b+) working within (w) working within + (w+) secure (s) secure + (s+)

8 Bands and steps cont… The three broader sections may be thought of in these terms- Beginning –. There may be a little of the previous band still to gain complete confidence in, but the pupil is working on the areas in this band Working Within –Up to 70% of the statements are confidently achieved Secure –the broad expectations for the band have been met and the children are learning more deeply and applying their learning over a wide range of contexts, independently.

9 Lower and high attaining pupils may be working at a band outside of their current year For children to be working at age related expectation, they would need to reach the secure (s) step at the end of the appropriate year, although during the transition period w+ is also acceptable. Secure +, pupils have attained a more thorough and wide ranging grasp of the content and concepts. Secure + is a stepping stone on to the criteria in the following band.

10 To convert or not to convert – that is the question… And the answer is NO! There is no real method to convert an old National Curriculum level to a new band and step. The content of the curriculum has changed with expectations being increased. Teachers have baselined all children using the new method of bands and steps.

11 Targets This is an example of how targets might be set for a child with a year one entry level assessment as working just below band 1 at the end of the EYFS requirements (40-60s+), in order for them to reach the secondary ready standard, 6 secure (6s) at the end of Year 6. 12 How can you help? Be aware of the new expectations – we will make these available to go home and on the website. Be aware that it is no longer about just moving children on as quickly as possible to the highest level. It is now about breadth, depth and mastery too. Be aware that fewer children in the first few years will possibly achieve the new secondary ready standard. This is expected nationally. Overnight the curriculum expectations have been raised, as has the standard to pass. Support school by working with your child at home.
