4 Biblical Studies In 1st & 2nd Peter Believers’ Submission 2:11 – 3:12 Domestic Relationships Ù Wives 3:1-6  A wife must submit to her husband v. 1a, 2 Eph 5 Col 3  Even if she is married to an unbeliever  Her “chaste” conduct would do more than any spoken word re: his own salvation v. 1b 1:12

7 Biblical Studies In 1st & 2nd Peter Believers’ Submission 2:11 – 3:12 Domestic Relationships Ù Wives 3:1-6  “In the same way…” (Likewise) is contextual  This does not mean she has no rights  Nor does it even suggest she cannot seek protection if she “suffers unjustly” at the hands of her unbelieving husband (she is not to be his “punching bag”)

8 Biblical Studies In 1st & 2nd Peter Believers’ Submission 2:11 – 3:12 Domestic Relationships Ù Wives 3:1-6  What should be her “emphasis?” vv. 3-4  The “outward packaging?”  The “inside?” Psa 119:11 Prov 4:23  She can learn from “spiritual ancestors” who submitted to husbands vv. 5-6 Gal 3:7

9 Biblical Studies In 1st & 2nd Peter Believers’ Submission 2:11 – 3:12 Domestic Relationships Ù Wives 3:1-6  If she wants to “win” her husband, how should she go about accomplishing this?  “Revolting” against his mistreatment?  Improving her outward appearance?  Improving the “hidden man of the heart?”

10 Biblical Studies In 1st & 2nd Peter Believers’ Submission 2:11 – 3:12 Domestic Relationships Ù Husbands 3:7  The overall context has been addressing the one in the submissive role  Yet, “believing” husbands are addressed re: their roles in this relationship  “Likewise” now refers to his “submission”

11 Biblical Studies In 1st & 2nd Peter Believers’ Submission 2:11 – 3:12 Domestic Relationships Ù Husbands 3:7  Instructions to husbands  He must “understand” his wife  He must cherish her as he would a “weaker vessel” (morally, spiritually, or physically?)  Remember the context!! 2:18 – 3:7

13 Biblical Studies In 1st & 2nd Peter Believers’ Submission 2:11 – 3:12 Domestic Relationships Ù Husbands 3:7  Instructions to husbands  He may be physically able to “harshly mistreat” his wife cp. 2:20  More importantly, she is his “spiritual equal”…she is his “fellow heir” Gal 3:28

14 Biblical Studies In 1st & 2nd Peter Believers’ Submission 2:11 – 3:12 Domestic Relationships Ù Husbands 3:7  Instructions to husbands  All this obviously condemns spouse abuse  If a husband mistreats his “suitable helper” and “fellow heir”…he really hurts himself Eph 5:28-29, 31 Gen 2:24

15 Biblical Studies In 1st & 2nd Peter Believers’ Submission 2:11 – 3:12 Domestic Relationships Ù Husbands 3:7  Instructions to husbands  More importantly, he damages his own relationship with God  His prayers (ability to communicate w/ God) will be “hindered” (cut off; thwarted)
