Lesson 1-4 Pages 23-27 Properties Lesson Check 1-3
2
What you will learn! 1. How to identify and use properties of addition and multiplication. 2. How to use the properties to simplify algebraic expressions.
3
PropertiesCounterexample Simplify Deductive reasoning
4
Commutative Property The order in which two numbers are added or multiplied does not change the answer!
5
Associative Property The way in which three numbers are grouped when they are added or multiplied does not change the answer!
6
Identity Property The sum of a addend and zero is the addend. The product of a factor and one is the factor.
7
Commutative Property of Addition 2 + 3 = 3 + 2 Commutative Property of Multiplication 2 x 3 = 3 x 2 Associative Property of Addition (5 + 8) + 2 = 5 + (8 + 2) Associative Property of Multiplication (4 x 6) x 3 = 4 x (6 x 3) Additive Identity 5 + 0 = 5 0 + 9 = 9 Multiplicative Identity 7 x 1 = 7 1 x 6 =6 Multiplicative Property of Zero 4 x 0 = 0 0 x 2 = 0
8
What you really need to know! The Big Question! Did the numbers move, or did the group change?
10
Example 1: Name the property shown by each statement: 3 10 2 = 3 2 10 Commutative Property x
11
Example 2: Name the property shown by each statement: (2 + 5) + m = 2 + (5 + m) Associative Property +
12
Example 3: Name the property shown by each statement: 17 1 = 17 Multiplicative Identity
13
Example 4: Find (18 20) 5 mentally. 1,800
14
Example 5: State whether the following conjecture is true or false. If false, provide a counter example. Division of whole numbers is commutative. False ; 12 ÷ 6 ≠ 6 ÷ 12
15
Example 7: Simplify the expression: 12 + (x + 18) 30 + x
