Parent Workshop Year 1 and Year 2 Curriculum Key Stage 1 January 2016

∗ To understand how expectations for all curriculum areas have risen within each year group ∗ To understand ways to support your child's learning at home Aims

∗ We are now using the phrases ‘EMERGING’, ‘EXPECTED’ and ‘EXCEEDING’ to describe your child’s progress against the curriculum for their year group. ∗ By the end of the year most children will be assessed as ‘EXPECTED' age-related attainment and some may be assessed as ’EXCEEDING' age-related attainment. Some pupils may not achieve ’EXPECTED' standards. ∗ In order to do this, we are using a combination of half termly assessments as well as on-going termly teacher assessments. Reporting to Parents/Carers

∗ Every year group follows the new National Curriculum ∗ There are much higher expectations across the school ∗ This curriculum is progressive so it builds on prior learning ∗ More opportunities are being planned for cross curricular Maths and English Curriculum

SATs test will take place at the end of KS1 (Year 2) ∗ Maths ∗ There will be two tests: ∗ Mental Arithmetic (20 mins) ∗ Mathematical fluency and reasoning (35 mins) ∗ Reading ∗ Paper 1, a combined booklet that integrates the reading texts and answer booklet (30 mins) ∗ Paper 2, a reading booklet with a separate associated answer booklet (40mins) ∗ SPaG ∗ Paper 1 – grammar and punctuation questions (20 mins) ∗ Paper 2 – spelling (15 mins) End of KS1 SATs

Key Facts Year 1 ∗ I know number bonds to 20. 0 + 20 = 20 1 + 19 = 20 2 + 18 = 20 3 + 17 = 20 4 + 16 = 20 5 + 15 = 20 6 + 14 = 20 7 + 13 = 20 8 + 12 = 20 9 + 11 = 20 10 + 10 = 20 20 + 0 = 20 19 + 1 = 20 18 + 2 = 20 17 + 3 = 20 16 + 4 = 20 15 + 5 = 20 14 + 6 = 20 13 + 7 = 20 12 + 8 = 20 11 + 9 = 20 20 – 0 = 20 20 – 1 = 19 20 – 2 = 18 20 – 3 = 17 20 – 4 = 16 20 – 5 = 15 20 – 6 = 14 20 – 7 = 13 20 – 8 = 12 20 – 9 = 11 20 – 10 = 10 20 – 20 = 0 20 – 19 = 1 20 – 18 = 2 20 – 17 = 3 20 – 16 = 4 20 – 15 = 5 20 – 14 = 6 20 – 13 = 7 20 – 12 = 8 20 – 11 = 9 Key Vocabulary What do I add to 5 to make 20? What is 20 take away 6? What is 3 less than 20? How many more than 16 is 20?

Key Facts Year 2 ∗ I know the multiplication and division facts for the 5 times table. 5 × 1 = 5 5 × 2 = 10 5 × 3 = 15 5 × 4 = 20 5 × 5 = 25 5 × 6 = 30 5 × 7 = 35 5 × 8 = 40 5 × 9 = 45 5 × 10 = 50 5 × 11 = 55 5 × 12 = 60 5 ÷ 5 = 1 10 ÷ 5 = 2 15 ÷ 5 = 3 20 ÷ 5 = 4 25 ÷ 5 = 5 30 ÷ 5 = 6 35 ÷ 5 = 7 40 ÷ 5 = 8 45 ÷ 5 = 9 50 ÷ 5 = 10 55 ÷ 5 = 11 60 ÷ 5 = 12 Key Vocabulary What is 5 multiplied by 7? What is 5 times 9? What is 60 divided by 5? Top Tips The secret to success is practising little and often. Use time wisely. Can you practise these KFs while walking to school or during a car journey?

Times Tables You may have heard that the government has announced that all children will be tested on their times tables at the age of 11 (end of KS2). Knowing times tables up to x12 are vital in developing mathematical understanding and to be able to do long division and multiplication in KS2. In Year 2 we learn the 2s, 5s and 10s. All children in Year 2 should be able to recall the multiplication and division facts for these tables. Eg 3 x 5 = 15 So what else do I know? 5 x 3 = 15 and 15 ÷ 3 = 5 and 15 ÷ 5 = 3 Children in Year 1 begin by learning halves and doubles up to 20.

Activities for parents: Using resources to add/subtract/multiply/divide Importance of Concrete? Pictorial? Abstract? ∗ Mymaths ∗ Practical investigations Key Messages

Writing Talk for writing You can help by; Reading stories and talking to your child about activities they do. Sequencing events Handwriting We teach handwriting with a particular emphasis on correct letter formation, pen hold, size and orientation of letters. C, o, a, d, g, r, n, m, h, b, p, etc At home you can help your child hold their pen correctly. In Year 2, children who show they can control the size and orientation of their letters will start to join some letters

Reading Developing reading skills Picture clues Phonic knowledge to sound out and blend Build sight vocabulary Read ahead Fluency (sounding out in their head) Comprehension skills Direct retrieval Inferential Hearing your child read at home is vital to your child’s reading success. Please sign your child’s reading record or planner when you have heard them read and then they can change their reading book. Please talk to your child about what they have read, why characters behaved in particular ways and even what they thought of the story.

SPaG Children learn about: adjectives, nouns, verbs, adverbs, expanded noun phrases, statements, commands, questions, exclamations suffixes (ment, less, ness, full, ly) subordination (when, if, that, because) and coordination (or, but, and) There is a big emphasis on spelling so we will be sending spellings home each week for literacy homework. These will be a mixture of high frequency tricky words and words that follow a particular spelling pattern.

Phonics or Letters and Sounds Begins in EYFS and carries on into Year 1. Children see how words are made up and learn spelling patterns. Key vocabulary that you will hear your child using: phoneme, grapheme, split vowel digraph End of Year 1 Phonic Check What you can do to help.

∗ Maths ∗ Number bonds and times tables ∗ Keep it practical and not too formal (Real life experiences) ∗ Reading ∗ Practising, sharing and talking about stories ∗ Writing ∗ In everyday life-shopping lists, post- its, notes and letters. ∗ Sounding out words as children write them ∗ Key Messages How you can help your child in Year 1 and 2
