hope for today KEY TEXT: Hebrews 8:1-5 SECTION 1 A Sanctuary on Earth and in Heaven Hope in a Heavenly SANCTUARY

hope for today CONSIDER: What was the central and holiest event that took place in the earthly sanctuary? Take a few moments to recall and discuss what took place in this event. Compare with Leviticus 6. Hope in a Heavenly SANCTUARY SECTION 1 A Sanctuary on Earth and in Heaven DISCUSS: After what was the earthly sanctuary modeled?

hope for today KEY TEXT: Hebrews 9:6-9 “ When these things were all in place, the priests regularly entered the first room as they performed their religious duties. But only the high priest entered the Most Holy Place, and only once a year. And he always offered blood for his own sins and for the sins the people had committed in ignorance. By these regulations the Holy Spirit revealed that the entrance to the Most Holy Place was not freely open as long as the Tabernacle and the system it represented were still in use. SECTION 1 A Sanctuary on Earth and in Heaven Hope in a Heavenly SANCTUARY

hope for today KEY TEXT (continued): This is an illustration pointing to the present time. The gifts and sacrifices that the priests offer are not able to cleanse the consciences of the people who bring them.” SECTION 1 A Sanctuary on Earth and in Heaven Hope in a Heavenly SANCTUARY

hope for today CONSIDER: The earthly sacrifices only symbolized what was to come. Without blood there is no remission of sins. Compare with Hebrews 9:22. Hope in a Heavenly SANCTUARY SECTION 1 A Sanctuary on Earth and in Heaven DISCUSS: In what ways was the earthly sanctuary limited? What important facts can we take from Hebrews 9:6-9?

SECTION 2 The Mediator’s Death was Necessary hope for today KEY TEXT: Hebrews 9:11-15, Hebrews 9:16-22 “Now when someone leaves a will, it is necessary to prove that the person who made it is dead. The will goes into effect only after the person’s death. While the person who made it is alive, the will cannot be put into effect. That is why even the first covenant was put into effect with the blood of an animal. For after Moses had read each of God’s commandments to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, along with water, Hope in a Heavenly SANCTUARY

SECTION 2 The Mediator’s Death was Necessary hope for today KEY TEXT (continued): and sprinkled both the book of God’s law and all the people, using hyssop branches and scarlet wool. Then he said, ‘This blood confirms the covenant God has made with you.’ And in the same way, he sprinkled blood on the Tabernacle and everything used for worship. In fact, according to the law of Moses, nearly everything was purified with blood. For without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness.” Hope in a Heavenly SANCTUARY

hope for today CONSIDER: Every drop of blood, whether in the first sacrifice at the gates of Eden, or in each morning and evening service, or on each Day of Atonement, pointed to the ultimate sacrifice, Jesus Christ. Three important reasons begin our understanding of why Jesus had to die: (1) without a shedding of blood there is no remission of sin; (2) in order for heirs to claim their inheritance the testator must die; and (3) the consequence of my sins and your sins is death. SECTION 2 The Mediator’s Death was Necessary Hope in a Heavenly SANCTUARY

hope for today DISCUSS: Why was it necessary for Jesus to die? SECTION 2 The Mediator’s Death was Necessary Hope in a Heavenly SANCTUARY

SECTION 3 Hope in a Heavenly Sanctuary hope for today KEY TEXT: Hebrews 9:23-28 Hope in a Heavenly SANCTUARY FURTHER STUDY: 1 Timothy 2:5; Ephesians 2:18; Hebrews 4:14-16; 7:25; 9:24; 10:19-22

hope for today CONSIDER: The sanctuary illustrated three phases of Christ’s ministry: (1) the substitutionary sacrifice, (2) the priestly mediation, and (3) the final judgment. Jesus’ sacrifice was sufficient to atone for our sins and grant us salvation. Hope in a Heavenly SANCTUARY SECTION 3 Hope in a Heavenly Sanctuary DISCUSS: What hope can we find in the Heavenly Sanctuary?

INVITATION hope for today As we look at the sanctuary we become certain that Jesus’ sacrifice was enough and that His atonement is sufficient. Just now Jesus is in heaven interceding for us. The Testator needed to die so that we can claim His promise. As you ponder that sacrifice, don’t you want the blood to cover your sins? Hope in a Heavenly SANCTUARY
