Rough Draft: Reminders o State your CLAIM as a fact. There is no need to say “I think” or “I believe.” o Example: “Bullying is the most serious problem facing teenagers today.” NOT “I think that bullying is a big problem for teenagers today.” o Example: “Actions are illegal, never people.” NOT “I do not believe that people should call immigrants illegal.” o You need a counterargument! This usually goes towards the end of the third body paragraph. State the rebuttal, then knock it down and move on. o Example: “Some people may argue that college athletes deserve to get paid because of the extra work load and stress on their bodies; however, as I have already proven, the free tuition and numerous other monetary perks provide enough incentive for them to play without pay.” o Example: “The principal and administrators say that headphones are a distraction from instruction, but actually, if we are allowed to use them during work time, they help us focus. o You MUST include evidence from your research to support your arguments. Make sure you don’t plagiarize though! Integrate your sources into your writing. o Example: “A research study done by Harvard University shows 58% of Americans have lived in poverty at some time.” o Example: “According to TIME Magazine’s article ‘School Uniforms Help Students,” more than 60% of high school teachers feel uniforms would be positive.
