The Wars Summative

Creative Assignment  With this assignment, you will get choice as to what you complete  Although the choices are radically different, they are all weighted the same and the focus should be on a combination of unique and individual CREATIVITY coupled with academic ACCURACY and depth of thought  Please note: it is an independent assignment and very little class time will be devoted to completing it

Creative Assignment  Your assignment should demonstrate a deeper understanding of the issues explored in Hamlet and should compliment/fit with the text accurately; in other words, part of your mark comes from how well it “fits/enhances” the text, not just “is it cool?”  Each of the choices has four components: a rough plan/outline/sketch/layout/chart of your brainstorming ideas an academic written component (a 1 page formally-written analysis proposal of your work and its link to Hamlet) a “creative” component that seeks to push your creative boundaries in areas “unconventional” to English One page, “post-creation”, reflection that communicates how the process went.

Choices 1. Web Design (Instagram/tumblr/twitter page) 2. Drama (write/perform a dramatic monologue) 3. News Research (Graphic Layout) 4. Creative Writing (Rewrite part of the story) 5. Engineering/Design (create belongings) 6. Music Composition (design/record a soundtrack) 7. Art/Painting (draw/paint/sketch) 8. Film (create a documentary)

Web Design  Design a Instagram/tumblr/twitter page with a news feed, audio visual component, and updates related to a main character in Hamlet.  Design notes and/or brainstorming chart are required.  Prepare a formally written (3 PEE) proposal, defending/analyzing your choices. Textual references in MLA format are expected.  One page, “post-creation”, reflection that communicates how the process went.

Drama  Write and perform a dramatic monologue of a major character from Hamlet.  A rough draft and/or brainstorming template is required  Prepare a formally written (3 PEE) proposal, defending/analyzing your choices. Textual references in MLA format are expected.  One page, “post-creation”, reflection that communicates how the process went.  Note: I have resources on proper format/requirements for a dramatic monologue

News Research  Find three stories/articles in a newspaper or magazine that parallel the plot in Hamlet. (ex. a war love story, a soldier doing something controversial, etc.) and present the parallels visually using bristol board or software of your choice (powerpoint, etc.).  A brainstorming chart or rough sketch of layout or links is required  Prepare a formally written (3 PEE) proposal, defending/analyzing your choices. Textual references in MLA format are expected.  One page, “post-creation”, reflection that communicates how the process went.

Creative Writing  Choose a critical plot point in Hamlet. Rewrite the plot/setting/characters and change all aspects of the story that would be affected by this reworking of the story.  A brainstorming template and/or rough draft is required  Prepare a formally written (3 PEE) proposal, defending/analyzing your choices. Textual references in MLA format are expected.  One page, “post-creation”, reflection that communicates how the process went.

Engineering/Design  Imagine going through the private belongings of one of the characters. What are three items that you might find? Create three of these items  Rough sketches and/or brainstorming chart is required  Prepare a formally written (3 PEE) proposal, defending/analyzing your choices. Textual references in MLA format are expected.  One page, “post-creation”, reflection that communicates how the process went.

Music Composition  Design/record a film soundtrack for one of the major works in this course.  A rough score and/or brainstorming template is required.  Prepare a formally written (3 PEE) proposal, defending/analyzing your choices. Textual references in MLA format are expected.  One page, “post-creation”, reflection that communicates how the process went.

Art/Painting  Paint/sketch/draw a painting (or portrait) that might be hanging in the living room of one of the characters.  A rough sketch and/or brainstorming notes are required.  Prepare a formally written (3 PEE) analysis paragraph defending/analyzing your choices. Textual references in MLA format are expected. Be sure to clearly connect the choice to plot and characterization.

Film  Imagine that you are creating a documentary entitled “Unsolved Mysteries of Hamlet”. In your creation of the documentary, discuss the unsolved mystery (ies), the evidence, and possible solutions to the mystery.  A rough script and/or brainstorming template are required.  Prepare a formally written (3 PEE) proposal, defending/analyzing your choices. Textual references in MLA format are expected.  One page, “post-creation”, reflection that communicates how the process went.
