Da-zi-bao Journal ● The da-zi-bao were used to publically humiliate people during the Cultural Revolution in China. Ji-li’s classmates even write one about her.

What is a da-zi-bao? ● The da-zi-bao could be defined as “a form of propaganda in the shape of a large handwritten poster presenting an important issue.”

What is Propaganda? ● Propaganda can be defined as “the spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person.”

Propaganda in Our Lives ● We are exposed to propaganda every day in the form of advertising. Propaganda was used heavily by Mao during the Chinese Cultural Revolution.

● We’ll view 8 pieces of propaganda, some related to Mao and some not. Write down a sentence or two describing your immediate reaction to each image. How does it make you feel? What is your gut response?
