2. Purpose for Today ■By the end of the period, you will have: ■become acquainted with the way the UW Library online catalog is set up. ■searched for and listed 5-10 print books that you would like to check out from the UW Library. ■possibly begun a search for materials other than print books.

6. How to get to the UW Library Search Page ■From the TJH Library page, click “Researching,” then click on the UW logo. ■Or, in the computer’s search bar, type in lib.washington.edu RESEARCHING UW LIBRARY LOGO

8. It is possible that you will get an “authentication” screen. If so, click “continue as guest.”

9. I am searching for Jim Henson, the man who created the Muppets. Over 16,000 hits!!

10. ■Use “search limiters” to narrow your search. ■On the left-hand bar, under “Refine My Results,” and then down to “Library,” click on “More Options.”

11. ■Exclude UW Bothell/ CCC Library and UW Tacoma Library. ■Click “Continue”

12. ■You can also limit by publication date, especially if you’re looking for primary sources from a particular time period.

13. ■Is the book available? ■No? Don’t write it on your book log. ■Yes? Write it on your book log, with the location and call number. NO YES NO YES

14. Will you be checking out each book you find at UW? ■Maybe… ■When you find at book at the library, you must look at it before putting it in the check out box. ■If it appears that you only need a small section of the book, take a picture of the pages (and cover and title pages). ■If the whole book seems useful, then place it in the check out box.

15. Have you finished searching for print books? ■Maybe… ■Go back and un-do your search limiters. ■If you had the years limited, expand your search. ■OR ■Put in a different key word. (So if I already did Jim Henson, I would put in “Muppets.”)

16. If you have explored “print books,” here are some other types of sources you may come across today: ■Peer-reviewed Journals (journal does not mean ‘diary’) ■Newspaper Articles ■Journals and Newspapers are only available online, on campus, so write all of the info in your log.

17. What is the difference between a journal and an article? ■When you see “article,” it means a JOURNAL article. ■When you want a newspaper article, it will say “newspaper article.” ■Remember that a JOURNAL is not a diary, it’s a scholarly publication.
