1 St Luke’s High School Parent Council

2 The Parental Involvement Act 2006 Parents/carers have a VITAL ROLE to play in their own child’s education From August 2006 –The Parent Council replaced the “School Board” and the “PTA” From then on,all parents/carers of children at St Luke’s High School automatically became members of the Parent Forum

3 The Role of the Parent Council is defined as :- “represent the views of all parents/carers,pupils,preschool groups and the wider community and to report back to the parents/carers in the school(“The Parent Forum”)....”

4 Membership of the Parent Council Senior Leadership Team Church representative Elected members from local authority Parents/Carers -including elected parent Council Office Bearers being Chair,Vice Chair,Treasurer and Secretary.

5 Meetings Constitution states that the Parent Council meets six times a year Can have ad hoc meetings to discuss Cluster fund raising matters or events (only one needed in 2013/2014) Minutes of Parent Council meetings are available to view on the School website

6 What the Parent Council does Works in partnership with the school Involved in consultations Identifying priorities for the School improvement Plan Advising and encouraging the Parent Forum to get involved in their child’s learning Fundraising Events Assisting in Cluster Quiz night Brainstorming of new fundraising opportunities

7 What the Parent Council does Expenditure of money Presentation to Head Boy and Girl Assisting in distribution of funds to Cluster schools for P7 Transition Residential Experience to an Outdoor Centre Representation of the school Representing the schools at National Parents Forum Representing school at Cluster Parent Council meetings Representing school at East Renfrewshire Chairs Parent Council meetings Representing school on the ERC Equalities Forum Representing scholl on the Catholic Parents Group

8 Benefits of the Parent Council For My Child When children see their parents/carers and family members getting involved:- Shows them you are interested in what the school is doing Lets them see you value what they are learning Helps them learn from your example Feel proud about their parents/carers

9 Benefits of the Parent Council For You Get to know the teachers and other parents/carers Gain a better understanding of how the school works and how children learn Can see how your own child relates to other children and teachers Have the satisfaction of knowing that you are making a useful contribution to the school and to children’s learning Can be a positive role model to young people

10 Benefits of the Parent Council For School They have a wider range of experience and skills to draw on They develop closer links with the parents/carers and school community Teachers have immediate access to parental carer views on certain aspects of the running of the school Building partnerships with parents/carers to support their child’s learning Encourage parents/carers as Business partners Involve and inform parents/carers through consultations Fundraising
