4 RED: hardiness and valor, willingness to sacrifice WHITE: signifies purity and innocence BLUE : signifies vigilance, perseverance, justice and determination of the people 50 STARS: represent the 50 states of the United States 13 STRIPES :represent the thirteen British colonies that declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain and became the first states in the Union. 5 "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” It was written in August 1892 by the socialist minister Francis Ballamy Originally published in The Youth’s Companion on September 8, 1892 According to the legislation of 1954, citizens should stand upright and place the right hand over the heart while reciting the pledge. Men not in uniform should remove any nonreligious head covering. Pledge Allegiance to the flag of U.S of America
