What’s the problem? Estimated social and economic cost of falls in 2010 was $1.84 billion Falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalisations each year Many people believe it’s only older people and children who fall Active working age adults also fall so we have a programme focusing on them as well as older adults and children

ACC’s falls programmes Older adults (65+ years) - Vitamin D – residential care & community - Exercise programmes Children (0-19 years) - Focus on unintentional falls - Working through key stakeholders on prevention programmes Working age adults (25-64 years) - Idea Nation
5
Working age falls WAP (25-64 year olds) account for 40% of home falls claims but 60% of the cost Over 100,000 home falls - $164m per year 10,000 people per year receive weekly comp 3,000 require more than three months off Less than 10% of claims account for half the cost
6
What is our approach? WAP falls is a long-term programme with a gutsy goal – 10% reduction in falls over ten years The programme plan is structured around the four Es framework Unregulated environment – limited opportunities for enforcement levers Few evidence-based interventions therefore we are using Idea Nation to find solutions Motivate behaviour change through social marketing
