L.B.F.D. TRAINING DIVISION

OBJECTIVES ABILITY TO TIE KNOTS 1-8 ACCORDING TO GRADING CRITERIA. IDENTIFY THE ROPE WEAKENING CHARACTERISTICS OF KNOTS 1-8. UNDERSTAND THE CARE, MAINTENANCE, HANDELING AND STORAGE OF ROPE. IDENTIFY THE TYPES OF ROPE CARRIED ON L.B.F.D. ENGINE CO. EXPLAIN HOW SPLICES ARE USED IN LADDER HALYARDS.

ROPES USED BY THE L.B.F.D. ARE MADE OF MANILA, COTTON AND NYLON

MANILA ROPE 3/8” MANILA ROPE IS USED FOR LADDER HALYARDS. 1/2” & 3/4” 100-200’ LENGTHS ARE USED FOR UTILITY LINES, SHORTER LENGHTS ARE USED FOR SECURING THE HOSE ROLLER.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE AVOID PULLING OR DRAGGING OVER ROUGH OR SHARP EDGES. PROTECT ROPE FROM ACIDS SOLVENTS OR HARSH CHEMICALS. AVOID OVERLOADING AND SHARP BENDS OR KINKS IN ROPE. THOROUGHLY DRY ROPE AND STORE IN AREA FREE OF MOISTURE.

NYLON ROPE TWO AND HALF TIMES STRONGER THAN MANILA LINE OF THE SAME SIZE.

NYLON ROPE LIFE LINES HOSE STRAPS RESCUE WEBBING FIRE BOATS

ROPE/DROP BAGS 75’ OF DOUBLE BRAIDED 5/16” NYLON LINE. USED AS A UTILITY LINE.

LIFE LINES HALF INCH STATIC KERNMANTLE NYLON LINE. 150-600 FOOT LENGTHS

KERNMANTLE 80/20 KERN MANTLE

STATIC KERNMANTLE LIFE LINE SPECIFICATIONS MAXIMUM SAFE WORKING STRENGTH 1,000 POUNDS. MINIMUM TENSILE STRENGTH 9,000 MAXIMUM AVERAGE STRETCH 1.5% AT 200 POUNDS. 10% OR MORE STRETCH AFTER LOAD HAS BEEN RELEASED, REMOVEL FROM SERVICE.

STAIC KERNMANTLE LIFE LINE SPECIFICATIONS MELTING POINT 480 DEGREES. MAINTAIN PROPERTIES AND STRENGTH TO 350 DEGREES. ABRASION RESISTANCE IS THREE TIMES THAT OF LAID MANILA ROPE.

STATIC KERNMANTLE CARE,MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE DO NOT STAND, WALK, JUMP ON OR DRAG ROPE. AVOID GAS, GREASE, OIL AND HARSH CHEMICALS. AVOID DIRECT SUN CONTACT. AVOID HEAT FROM FRICTION.

STATIC KERNMANTLE CARE, MAINTENANCE AND STORAGE CLEAN WITH ROOM TEMPERATURE WATER 40 DEGREES, MAY USE MILD DETERGENT OR FABRIC SOFTENER. INSPECT AND INVENTORY AFTER EACH USE. STORE LOSE AND DRY, AVOID KINKS AND VIBRATIONS. ALTERNATE END OF LIFE LINE AFTER USE.

INSPECTION OF KERNMANTLE ROPE INSPECT AFTER EACH USE FEEL ROPE FOR FUZZINESS AND CHANGES IN DIAMETER ( HOURGLASS) LOOK FOR: PUFFS- CORE FIBERS THAT PROTRUDE FROM THE SHEATH. LOOK FOR: BOOGERS- SEVERLY WORN PLACE POSSIBLY SHOWING CORE STRANDS. EXAMINE FIBER BUNDLES ( PICS) IF MORE THEN 50% ARE BROKEN, IT IS TIME TO RETIRE THE ROPE.

INSPECTION OF KERNMANTLE ROPE IF A ROPE HAS TAKEN A HARD FALL OR HAS BEEN USED FOR A NON- STANDARD TYPE USE, SUCH AS TOWING A CAR, IT SHOULD BE RETIRED.

BECKET BEND USED TO TIE TWO ROPES OF UNEQUAL SIZES

BOWLIN USED AROUND ANY STANDING PART, VERY SECURE WILL NOT SLIP OR JAM

HALF HITCH USED IN CONJUCTION WITH OTHER KNOTS, MAY BE USED AS A FINAL BINDING KNOT.

TIMBER HITCH USED TO HOIST DRY HOSE LINES AND CERTAIN TOOLS WHEN AN EYE SPLICE IS NOT PROVIDED
