6 Objectives of the TWG Meeting To discuss current issues of instrumentation and control technologies in NPPs, and to address new emerging technical challenges To present status reports of Member States To evaluate on-going IAEA I&C activities (2008 - 2009) To plan contributions to 2010 - 2011 activities To make recommendations for future IAEA I&C programmes (next budget cycle 2012 - 2013) To further develop the draft document on the core knowledge of I&C To establish and improve communication channels among TWG members/observers and the IAEA

8 NPP I&C: a time of transition Reasons for increased interest in modern I&C technologies: Number of NPP units under construction is 44 representing 38 GWe total electrical capacity 1999: 40 “delayed” NPP projects → 2007: 10 operational + 9 under construction NPP operating licence beyond 60 → I&C modernization Future new NPP constructions → introducing latest technologies

9 145 IAEA Member States 30 with operating NPPs (436 units 372 GWe) Additional 61 are interested in launching new NPP projects

10 New Nuclear Countries 61 have requested support from IAEA on what they need to introduce to have nuclear power Africa20 Latin America12 Asia pacific20 Europe and FSU9

11 NPP I&C: a time of transition Plans in major countries: USA - 31 plants are under NRC review China - 25 plants are planned Japan - 9 plants are planned Russia - 6 plants are planned Korea - 5 plants are planned
