School Uniforms Am I for or against school uniforms 1. Student grades and attendance improve 2. Cliques and social groups are eliminated, thus creating unity among the student body 3. It helps the economy in the community
15
First Main Point – Student grades and attendance improve. In recent years, student test scores have continued to plummet as has the graduation rate in the state of Georgia. We currently have one of the worst graduation rates in the country and our SAT scores consistently rank near the bottom in relation to other states. Something must be done to improve grades and attendance. Research conducted by the National Council for School Improvement showed schools that had adopted a uniform policy in their system showed a dramatic increase in student grades and better attendance from students as compared to schools that did not have a uniform policy. Student grades improved by seven points across the board in the Columbia City School system in Columbia City, Indiana, two years after adopting a school uniform policy. In Green Bay, Wisconsin, the City School System saw a dramatic increase in the number of days students attended school and credit this improvement to the advent of uniforms. This research alone proves uniforms should be mandatory in public schools.
16
Second Main Point Cliques and social groups are eliminated, thus creating unity among the student body. A major concern in many school systems today is the disparity in the socio-economic differences in the make-up of the student body. Some schools have students who come from homes and families that are very wealthy while at the same time have other students who represent the low-income to poverty level. This mix can and does cause tension and resentment within the walls of the school. Students wear certain brand names who can afford a particular label, while others steal and fight for the opportunity to also wear brand name clothes, thus “fitting in” to certain groups. According to Sally Smith, State Superintendent of Schools in Maryland, with the advent of mandatory school uniforms, such tension as to “fitting in” has been eliminated. “Our students in Maryland no longer worry about brand name clothing or the type of shoes they can afford to wear since students now wear the same thing. This has reduced violence and discipline issues in our schools.” In many states, systems that require uniforms offer multiple variations of the uniform to still give students a choice –within limits- of what to wear to school.
17
Third Main Point It helps the economy in the community Without question, the greatest advantage and reason school uniforms should be mandatory is that it helps the local economy of a community. Once the school determines the combination of uniforms that can be worn, local stores work with the school system to provide the best possible prices to families. This is especially helpful to families that do not have a great deal of money to spend of clothing. The school system also works with civic organizations to help buy uniforms for families that can not afford to do so. This act of kindness has a residual effect on the school and community as it serves as a sense of helping one another. Businesses prosper, families stay within the community to spend their hard-earned money so the result is a win-win situation for everyone. Much like the individual who wants to buy a new car but goes out of town to buy the vehicle, the same can be said for those who go outside the community to purchase clothes for the school year. When that brand new fancy SUV is purchased locally, the money stays in the community, just like the family that buys uniforms and other school supplies in town. In this situation, even people in the community who do not have children attending schools that require school uniforms benefit from the money that stays in the community.

It’s Up To You!! Pick a topic that has two sides to the issue Take a stand and stick with your stand Establish three reasons why you are correct Main point one needs research/ a statistic to back up your stand Main point two needs a quote from an expert to back up your stand Main point three needs an example (Simile or metaphor is possible)
