3 Pieter Bruegel (1525-1569) Born in Bree, Habsburg, Netherlands (modern-day Belgium) Part of the Dutch and Flemish Renaissance Influenced by the landscapes of France and Italy

4 Diego Velázquez (1599-1660) Lived in Seville, Spain Worked in the Baroque period –Exaggerated lighting, excessive details, intense emotion Most of his work was done for the King Philip IV of Spain Influenced Picasso

17 M.C. Escher (1898-1972) From the Netherlands Originally studied architecture before switching to the decorative arts His work has a great mathematical component and involved optical illusions and impossible objects

18 Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904- 1991) Springfield, Massachusetts, USA While at Dartmouth College, he was kicked out of their literary magazine. In 1927, he became a writer and illustrator for the humour magazine “Judge”. His first book was published in 1937.

19 Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) Lived in Coyoacán, Mexico Influenced by Mexican culture: bright colour, symbolism, primitive style Suffered serious injury and on-going pain from a car accident in 1925. Her self-portraits often explore this pain.

20 Lucien Freud (1922 – 2011) Born in Berlin, Germany moved to London, England Grandson of Sigmund Freud When he paints portraits of people he doesn’t try to change them or make them more beautiful.

21 Keith Haring 1958-1990 From Pennsylvania, USA Involved in the New York Pop art/Street art movement His work is mainly about birth, death, sexuality, and war Died from AIDS at age 31
