2. “What am I to do with Jesus?” Matthew 27:22 Pontius Pilate

3. “What am I to do with Jesus?” Pontius Pilate was the Roman Governor of Judea for about 10 years (26 – 36 or 27 - 37 A.D.). Obviously, he was the presiding authority at the trial of Jesus. There are several statements made by various individuals and groups about Jesus that were intended as insults, but contain unintended salient spiritual truths when properly considered, cf. Matt.27:40-43. But perhaps none of these points compare in their penetrating power as the question posed by Pilate…. He was attempting to gain Jesus’ release by offering the convict Barabbas in His place, but Pilate’s question is still the most significant to be asked by anyone today.

4. “What am I to do with Jesus?” What did people of the time do with Jesus? Some tried to make Him a food vendor, John 6:5-15 > 22-26 > 30-36. Some tried to make Him a doctor, John 4:46-53. Some tried to make Him a physical king, John 6:14-15; (Luke 23:2) 18:36; 19:12-16. Some tried to make Him a Rabbi/Teacher (like their others), Mark 10:17-22. Some believed Him, but desired more the approval/acceptance of men, John 12:42-43; 19:4-16. Some doubted and crucified Him as an imposter, Matt.27:22-26.

5. “What am I to do with Jesus?” What do people of today do with Jesus? Some still seek Him more for physical sustenance, John 6:48-58; Matt.6:33. Some still seek Him more for physical healing, James 5:14-16; 1Pet.2:24. Some still seek Him more for patriotic/national purposes, 2Cor.10:3-6; Jonah. Some seek Him more for material purposes, 1Tim.6:5-10,17-19; Matt.13:22. Some believe Him, but desire more the approval/acceptance of men, John 5:39-44; 1Cor.4:1-5; 2Cor.10:18. Some doubt and crucify Him,Heb.6:4-6.

6. So the real question becomes: “What will YOU do with Jesus?” But, there were some people then, and there are some now who instead: Seek Him for spiritual sustenance as “the bread of life,” John 6:35. Seek Him for spiritual healing from sin, Matt.13:15. Seek Him to be their spiritual King, 1Tim.6:15. Seek Him more for spiritual riches, 2Cor.4:16-18. Believe Him and desire more than anything else His approval/acceptance, Phil.4:8-14. Have confident faith in Him, and crucify themselves, Rom.6:1-11.
