1
Why new renewable energy technologies are not fully utilized ? Lifestyle issues; not used properly; people not aware of the use No invention is going to make people abandon their traditional lifestyle in a blink of an eye
2
What can be done to increase the usage Involvement of the community Capacity building of sustainable use of biomass Cultural aspects: the importance of fire in also a social context Engaging people in the maintenance of forests Providing with their own recourses – not neighbours
3
If new technologies are installed, why are they abandoned? Technology breakdown can have detrimental effects There should be a demand from the people rather than an intervention from government or an NGO Affordability vs acceptability from the local perspective Has to be affordable but not a freebee in order to be appreciated and maintained
4
Solutions to improve the acceptability and life span of technologies: Demonstration of the functionability of new technology Knowledge and technology transfer are undividable Technology should also be adapted to the local environment From business point of view there should be an expanding market Availability of local skilled staff
5
Experiences from succesfull projects: Local initiatives have more legal, social and cultural acceptability Should be viable business by the time external finance ends
6
Some fundemental questions about BoP BoP is seen very differently by policy and business people; can be a strength or weakness There should be a common understanding of the basic concept to build a platform Knowledge of local conditions requirement for building viable business models in BoP framework
7
The Eternal Questions of Development Assistance The impact of development assistance decreasing; is it just always following the latest trend? Population growth: women’s education the best solution; why still not used fully?
8
Innovation in the area of biomass energy Opportunities and challenges of taking solutions on gasification to the markets –Potential business opportunities Mass production of stove components Charcoal market Carbon credits –Challenges Finding trustworthy partners Quality and standardisation Local availability of equipments and materials Upscaling (domestic level, co-generation, small partnerships)
9
Local knowledge 1) Peoples priorities and user needs –digital story telling – giving so. a voice (individuals and/or communities) –participatory mapping empowerment fo communities to map environmental changes use for e.g. reforestation/restoring healthy ecosystems, to be used sustainably
10
2) Promoting Innovations –Networking (on different scales and across stakeholders; vertical or horizontal) –financing – solution package does not necessarily require money – need for technical support, fundraising –facilitating production centers –cross-generational information exchange (linking indigenous/traditional knowledge and youths modern knowledge to encourage innovation) –linking communities, schools, universities
