Scientific lab report Title of experiment How light works Team members: Sasha and Felicity

Aim: To observe what happens when you put up to three pieces of red cellophane and put it in front of a light and will see how well the colour shows.

Hypothesis/Prediction: I think that with one piece of red cellophane you will see it very faintly. With two pieces of red cellophane it will be clear, with three pieces it will be dark and old.

Materials: (What you need) 3x pieces of red cellophane the exact same length 1x light source 2x mirrors at a 90°

Method: 1.Make sure the room is kind of dark 2.Adjust the mirrors to a 90° angle 3.Turn your light source on the lowest focus. 4.Grab one piece of red cellophane in front of the light source then record how light the colour of the reflection is.

5. Grab two pieces of red cellophane in front of the light source then record how light the colour of the reflection is. 6. Grab three pieces of red cellophane in front of the light source then record how light the colour of the reflection is. 7. Graph the results. Method Continued

When we put one piece of cellophane in front of the light we saw that the shadow was really red and clear. When we started to add more cellophane in front of the light the shadows colour decreased. Like when we put two pieces of cellophane the colour of the shadow decreased. Observations:

In our experiment we found out that when you put cellophane in front of a light, it blocks it out and the colour starts to fade away. The more cellophane you use the more opaque the cellophane becomes. The shadow starts to fade. Discussion #1

You can see how this happens in our experiment when we put three pieces and two pieces of cellophane in front of the light source. In our observations you can also see that when we put more red cellophane in front of the light source the shadow fades. The shadow fades because the cellophane becomes darker. Discussion #2

In our observations you can also see that when we put more red cellophane in front of the light source the shadow fades. The shadow fades because the cellophane becomes darker.*Opaque – something that blocks out light e.g. a heavy curtain that blocks out the light from the sun. It doesn’t have to be the sun it can be a general light. In our experiment we put it in the terms of cellophane, when we put more pieces of cellophane in front of the light source.* Transmitting/Transmit- When something goes through another object. In our experiment the light transmitted through the cellophane. Discussion #3

When we conducted this experiment our hypothesis was partially wrong because we thought that with one piece of cellophane it would be hard to see and with two pieces it would be easier and with three pieces it would be crystal clear. We found out that the more cellophane you put the more opaque the cellophane becomes so it’s not transmitting as much light. To follow up we might get clear shapes to go in front of the light source with the cellophane still in front as well and see if the light still comes through. Conclusion
