MYSTERY POWDERS 1

Focus for the Lesson (How People Learn) Making observations Recording data Planning investigations Engineer a use that solves a problem 2

In Your STEM Notebook We Should See… – Clearly written observations – Drawings – Information about the properties of the mystery powders – Easy to understand and replicate investigation plans – Record your thinking, thoughtful reflections on learning 3

Final Things to Remember Group Work Norms Reminder of “Home base” Identify “Materials Managers” 4

Follow these directions: 1.Place 1 scoop of “mystery powder” onto your plate 2.Use hand lens to observe and then record the properties of the “mystery powder” 3.Predict then record what will happen when you add water 5

Follow these directions: 1.Now create 3 small piles of “mystery powder” on the plate 2.Add 1 spoonful of water on each pile – record 3.Predict and record what will happen when you add 1 T. water to each pile 4.Add another 1 T. water to each pile 5.Now… what do you wonder about this powder? 6

OPEN ENDED EXPLORATION Continue the investigation – this time without directions Your goal – to find out as much as you can about what will happen when… OPTIONS: – Adding different liquids (Salt solution or sugar solution) – Heating (use hot pads) – Cooling (use cold packs) – Something of your choice? 7

OPEN ENDED EXPLORATION Come up with a plan for how you will investigate No right or wrong approach – just be safe ALWAYS MAKE PREDICTIONS BEFORE TESTING Proceed however you like but the group must agree Watch the time and don’t spend too much time planning When ready, send the Materials Manager to the table to get materials 8

Hungry for More? Read the short informational piece – the content Answer the questions in your STEM Notebook Did the reading answer all your questions? Where might we go for additional answers? 9

For My Assessment Pleasure… Save a page in notebook for Answers Sheet Turn in: – Your STEM notebook – open to Mystery Powders – Answers to the reading on PSA 10

11 Think up a practical use for this mystery powder in a real-world situation Draw a picture of how the product would be used Write an advertising slogan or jingle so people will see how useful it will be

Examining Your Learning Take a stroll through your STEM notebook Think about the activities I engaged you in throughout this lesson: Where were you most engaged and why? Where did you struggle and why? 12
