2 Remember.... ARE A – Assertion (Your side) “We are against Year Round Schools!” R – Reasons (WHY?) It costs a lot of money to run a school all year E – Evidence (PROOF) “According to the Los Angeles Times....”

3 What is Formal Debate??? Debate is a discussion of two opposing views or topics. Formal debates have special rules and time limits agreed to in advance. A formal debates have two teams. The Proposition & Opposition

4 Debate Teams The Proposition is for or “pro” the central topic or statement The Opposition is against or “con” the central topic or statement. Each team has 3 members

5 Role of the 1 st Speaker The 1 st Speaker (3 minutes) Introduces the assersion Introduces other speakers in the group Tells what ideas the 1 st and 2 nd speakers will address. Presents reasons and evidence (As many as you want, as long as it is not said by someone else)

6 Role of the 2 nd Speaker The 2 nd Speaker (3 minutes) Assertion Reason #1 Evidence to support Reason #1 Reason #2 Evidence to support Reason #2 (You may have more reasons, just make sure they are not repetitive)

7 Role of the Rebuttal Speaker The Rebuttal Speaker(3 minutes) Summarize what 1 st & 2 nd speaker said Reasons and Evidence to support Rebuttal (Find issue “holes” in the otherside’s argument)
