GENERAL MATH STUDY TIPS MATH SKILLS STUDY TIPS For additional study information go to: www.frc.edu/home/SSS/learn_center.htm
2
ATTEND ALL CLASSES!!! Each class builds on the previous ones. This is the most important study skill to ensure that you keep up with the instructor.
3
READ TEXT BEFORE CLASS Read what the instructor will be lecturing on before you go to class. Read slowly-speed reading doesn’t work. Read the introduction, summary, section headings and look at diagrams. Know what the symbols mean-look in the glossary or earlier part of the text. Work all the examples. Ask specific questions about what you don’t understand.
4
UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPTS. Do the examples in the book. Make up your own examples. Exam questions may be different from the book.
5
PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE After you understand the concepts, PRACTICE. Force yourself to remember methods as you work the problems. Don’t look back in the book.
6
KEEP UP WITH ASSIGNMENTS The only way to learn math is by doing it. Attend class, read the text and do homework every day. Falling behind can put you in deep trouble.
7
ASK SPECIFIC QUESTIONS. Write down specific problems you are having trouble with. Don’t be vague and say you just don’t understand.
8
DON’T HESITATE TO GET HELP Free peer tutoring is available in the Learning Center. Also, consider forming a study group with other members of your class. est.
