Other Threats to Sustainability
2
Matter and energy are recycled throughout Earth’s systems: Lithosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, biosphere. Water cycle, carbon cycle, nitrogen cycle, phosphorus cycle, etc. No new matter has ever been created.
3
Octonauts Octonauts 0:40 to 2:30
4
Nutrient levels in aquatic ecosystems increase, leading to an increase in plant growth. Algae bloom Caused by run off of nitrogen and phosphorus into waterways (usually from fertilizer use).
5
Process: Nitrogen and phosphates from fertilizers and sewage run-off into water. Nutrients stimulate excessive algae growth. Algae bloom blocks sunlight, prevents deeper plants from growing, they die. Algae dies off, sink to bottom, decomposed by bacteria. Bacteria use up all the oxygen. Other fish die due to lack of oxygen.
7
Prevent heat from leaving the atmosphere, thus increasing the temperature of the atmosphere. Carbon Dioxide, Methane. Greenhouse effect.
8
The burning of fossil fuels involves a chemical reaction that uses up oxygen and releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Coal, Petroleum, Natural Gas
