1 Essay of Place Peer Editing  Revising in Peer Groups  Rules: It must be quiet as you edit; write comments on the writer’s paper; you need to be thorough and critical-this should not be something you fly through  HW: Revise your essay based on your peer comments from today.  Final Draft with 3 Different Pre- Writes and Rough Draft with peer edits due Wed.

2 Peer Editing: The Senses  Which senses are emphasized in this essay? Highlight and comment on the sensory images you find powerful. Is there anything that could be shown with further detail?  Does the writer tap into at least three- four of the senses? If the picture still seems 2- D instead of 3-D, offer suggestions as to where the author could indulge a little more in a specific sense.  What stylistic devices work well? Can you notice them in the narrative?

3 Peer Editing: Showing Emotion  Highlight places where the author shows emotion instead of telling. Comment on what makes these passages strong.  Highlight places where the author is telling emotion instead of showing. Offer suggestions on how to empower these passages.  Are there any places that seems to lack life? That lose your interest? Highlight and comment on these passages and offer suggestions.

4 Peer Editing: Structure  Does the balance between physical description and personal narrative (emotions, memories, etc.) work well? If there are places where the writing weighs too heavily on one or the other, offer commentary and suggestions.  Is there an organizing element of the piece, or does it feel to random in places? Mark any random places that don’t connect smoothly and offer suggestions.

5 Peer Editing: Connection  DO you as the reader have a connection with the piece? In what way?  Do you see the writer’s sense of belonging with the place?

6 Essay of Place  Due Date: Fri., January 22-you must include all 3 drafts with the final draft (4 total)-2 pages minimum-typed, double-spaced  You must use at least four of five specific sensory images  You must ALSO incorporate at least five different stylistic devices in your writing.  Make sure you write about memories, why the place holds significance to you, etc…. Don’t be obvious.  Show precision and specificity-Choose strong verbs, adjectives, etc.  Clearly SHOW using figurative language devices and sensory images  Use a variety of sentence types  Remember to give your essay structure and organization  Strive for authentic, involved voice  Include an original, authentic title-one preferably that doesn’t say Essay of Place  Invite and engage your reader- really think about your openings and conclusions  EDIT for yourself: spend the time  FYI: Make sure there is a balance between place (physical description) and emotional tie; make sure you tell a story
