Vantage Point (pg. 150) vantage point: point or position from which one writes a description fixed vantage point: you describe what you see from a particular position Ex. Stationary camera (same direction/angle) moving vantage point: you describe your subject from a number of different positions Ex. Hand-held camera (all angles)

Dominant Impression (pg. 148- 149) An effective description leaves the reader with a dominant impression- overall attitude, mood, or feeling about the subject. Can take many different forms: awe, inspiration, anger, or distaste. D.I. acts as the implied thesis or author’s main point

Method of Organization (pg. 150) Three types of organization Spatial: Systematically describe a subject from top to bottom, inside to outside, or near to far away. Or start from a central focus and work your way out. Ex. College campus, focus on a main building and then start describing the campus by working your way out.

Methods of Organization cont’d Chronological Order: works well for describing events or changes that occur in objects or places over a given period. Ex. Changes in a puppy’s behavior as it grows or a child as it grows Least-to-most or most-to-least Ex. Different smells in a flower garden or sounds of an orchestra tuning up
