3
Main Idea/Vocabulary data graph bar graph scale vertical axis Display and analyze data using bar graphs and line graphs. interval horizontal axis frequency line graph
4
Example 1 Analyze a Bar Graph ANIMALS Make a bar graph of the data. Compare the time it takes for a rabbit to be born to the time it takes for a camel to be born.
5
Example 1 Analyze a Bar Graph Step 1Decide on a scale and interval. The data include numbers from 31 to 406. So, a scale from 0 to 500 and an interval of 100 are reasonable. Step 2Label the horizontal and vertical axes.
6
Example 1 Analyze a Bar Graph Step 3Draw bars for each animal. The height of each bar shows the gestation period for each animal. Step 4Label the graph with a title. The height of the bar for camel is about 13 times the height of the bar for rabbit. Answer: It takes about 13 times as many days for a camel to be born as it does for a rabbit to be born.

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 1 A.There were two times as many customers on Saturday as there were on Monday. B.There were two times as many customers on Monday as there were on Saturday. C.There were three times as many customers on Saturday as there were on Monday. D.There were three times as many customers on Monday as there were on Saturday. RESTAURANT Make a bar graph of the data. Compare the number of customers at the restaurant on Monday to the number of customers at the restaurant on Saturday.

Example 2 Analyze a Line Graph WATER USE Make a line graph of the data at the right. Then describe the change from 1960 to 1995.
9
Example 2 Analyze a Line Graph Step 1Decide on the scale and the interval. The data include numbers from 61 to 100. The scale is 0 to 100 and the interval is 20. Step 2Label the horizontal and vertical axes.
10
Example 2 Analyze a Line Graph Step 3Draw and connect the points for each year. Each point shows the billions of gallons of water consumed per day. Step 4Label the graph with a title. Answer: Water consumption increased from 1960 to 1995, with a slight dip in use between 1980 and 1995.

1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 2 A.Total snowfall decreased from 1997 to 1999 and then increased from 1999 to 2002. B.Total snowfall decreased from 1997 to 2000 and then increased from 2000 to 2002. C.Total snowfall decreased from 1997 to 2000 and then increased in 2001. D.Total snowfall decreased from 1997 to 2001 and then increased in 2002. SNOWFALL Make a line graph of the data below. Then describe the change from 1997 to 2002.
