Water vulnerability around the world L.O: To assess the causes and effects of water vulnerability across the globe. Starter: What do you think ‘water vulnerability’ might mean? Extension: Using the photos, can you give any causes of water vulnerability?

Glossary Term: Write it in your book Water vulnerability: Being at risk or in danger because of a lack of clean water.

Water vulnerability map – released 2013 Task: Look at the map below and describe the areas that are experiencing the most severe water vulnerability. (The darker the colour, the more vulnerable they are) Extension: Use your own knowledge to try and explain this distribution.

Water vulnerability around the world Divide your page as shown here. Write the name of the country in each box. As you watch the videos, fill in reasons why these areas are water vulnerable and the symptoms for each area. Symptoms: Not having enough water that is clean for drinking or cooking Not having toilets or sanitation (risking disease) Low levels of hygiene (risking disease) Having to travel a long way to find water Not having water to grow crops Causes: Conflict Drought Water Infrastructure (meaning pipes and wells) Floods Turn to the person next to you and spend five minutes discussing your answers. Ensure your tables are completed in detail – have you understood the different causes of water vulnerability for each area? Was there more than one cause in each area? Did you think of these?

Tasks Answer the following in your books: All: Colour-code the causes in your table into human and physical. Were the causes mainly human or physical? Who was generally most affected by water vulnerability? Men, women or children? Explain your answer. Most: Do you think any of the causes are easily preventable? Say which one, and why / why not. Some: Rank the effects in your table from most serious to least serious. Justify your first and last choices.

And finally... Discuss in pairs what you think should be done to address the problem of water vulnerability across the world.
