The Blues In this presentation you will be learning about The Blues and Slavery. By Jennifer Peters, 8G2

What were the blues? The blues is a style of music created by African- Americans. Blues music was firstly performed by one singer with a guitar or a banjo. Song Style The lyrics are full of emotion and tell a story of pain and suffer. It was a tradition and was passed from musician to musician. They have a three-line structure, some singers improvise the words. The repetition of the first line gave them time to think of a third one.

Why did the slave trade happen? O Thousands of Africans were forced to go to America because they were treated like slaves by their white masters. O In the 16th and 17th centuries, Portuguese traders took slaves from Africa to work in the Portugal and also work for the Spanish people in South America. Maybe 350,000 Africans were taken in this way as slaves to America O In the 16th century, English shippers started selling slaves to the Spanish. Sir John Hawkins was the first English man to do this starting in 1562.
