4 Patrick Pham (2006) What Is Stress? Stress is a part of life. Distress is when a person feels unable to handle the stress. Productive stress is when stress is used as an energy that serves as a driving force. A physical, chemical or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension and may be a factor in disease causation.

Sleep provides a foundation for managing daily activities Sleep enables people to function at their best Sleep deprivation can have serious consequences Sleepiness is a chief cause of over 35% of motor vehicle fatalities Humans only function at 50-70% efficiency when deprived of sleep

10 Patrick Pham (2006) Dealing with feelings Exercise: get your heart beating very quickly to reduce bodily tension Describe and focus on stressor: once you can identify and describe the physical sensation it will often disappear Breathe: concentrate on breathing Be aware of your body posture and tension level. Tense and relax: once you are aware of body tension; center on the affected region then tense the muscle followed by relax the muscle Guided imagery: relax completely by finding a safe place in your mind.
