3 Conflict & Change When there is conflict between or within societies, change is the result.

4 Conflict and Change How does conflict with friends change your relationship? How might conflict among family members result in change for that family? Why is there change when you have conflict between or within societies?

5 ... In a democracy, rule of law influences the behavior of citizens, establishes procedures for making policies, and limits the power of government

7 1.What prevents authority figures from abusing their power? 2. Why should you (or shouldn’t you) have all laws and rules written down in an official document?

8 Distribution of Power... the distribution of power in government is a product of existing documents and laws combined with contemporary value and beliefs.

9 1.Why is the power structure at your school set up the way it is? 2.How is power divided in your family?

10 Location Location affects a society’s economy, culture, and development.

11 Location Absolute Location Absolute location —the exact spot on Earth where a place is found Relative Location Relative location is where a place is in relation to other places example: LatitudeLongitude "Turn right when you see the big monkey statue, move 5 blocks down and on your left will be a water fountain".

12 1. Would your life be different if you were a student at a middle school in Australia? How so?

13 Technological Innovation.. Technological innovations have consequences, both intended and unintended, for a society.

14 1.How has the “social media” (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, etc.,) both benefited and harmed school? 2. What technological innovations have impacted the way you are taught and the way you study?

15 Movement/ Migration The movement or migration of people and ideas affects all societies involved.

16 Movement We interact with each other through travel, trade, information flows (E-Mail) and political events. Not only do humans move but also ideas move; fashions move; fads move. What is an example of an idea that moves? How do we depend on people in other places? What would happen if we traveled by camel or horse? How do we move from place to place?

17 The Earth’s Cultural Geography Migration – Moving from one place to another Immigrant – People who move from one country to another Push–Pull Theory – People migrate because something “pushes” them and the hope for better living conditions pulls Urbanization – The movement of people to the cities

18 Production, Distribution, Consumption.. The production, distribution, and consumption of goods/services produced by the society are affected by the location, customs, beliefs, and laws of the society.

19 1. Who decides the price of shoes? Gas? Or Smart phones? 2. What effects did the recent recession had (or still does) on people in Atlanta?

20 Individuals, Groups & Institutions The actions of individuals, groups, and or institutions affect society through intended and unintended consequences

21 How might the actions of a few students (positive or negative) bring consequences for an entire class?
