Vandalising the local park Stealing a penny sweet from the local shop Shoplifting clothes Murder Burglary Speeding (but the offender had good reason to) Manslaughter (murder without intent) Drink driving you are the judge! 1.Which of them, if any, are victimless? 2.Which punishments would you give these offences? 3.How should repeat offenders be dealt with?

The Different Types of Punishment Aim Retribution To make the offender suffer and pay for what they have done Deterrence To discourage the offender (and others) from committing further crimes Reform Punishments should be aimed at changing the character of the criminal so that they keep the law in future Protection Society must be protected from violent and persistent offenders

The Point in Punishment Now go back over the punishments you gave for each of the crimes listed and decide which aim you think that punishment best fulfils For example… Murder should get a prison sentence for life, but 25 years maximum so the prisoner has a chance to reform in prison.

Lighter and Darker Read the story out loud together Then, read through individually and highlight the sections that you think could have been motivated by a Christian teaching. Take time once you have done this to share what you think you found with the person next to you

Write to him! Your final task is to write to Christian about his thoughts. Respond directly to the points he makes in the story and make sure you explain your reasons so that he understands you. For example… Do you associate with him, i.e. share his anger? Do you think he is right or wrong? Which type of punishment is most fitting for the terrorists for their crimes in your opinion? If there is time some of you will read them out
