Personal Essay Rubric Six Traits Rubric Ideas essay is informative with a clear focus has an effective lead contains specific details, examples, and facts elaborates on details, examples, and facts Organization essay is broken into effective paragraphs paragraphs are connected to each other and subject paragraphs have effective topic sentences body sentences are organized to create meaning essay has an effective closing Voice speaks in an engaging way that keeps readers interested shows that writer cares about the subject shows that the writer is thinking about the reader presents an appropriate level of language (not too informal) Word Choice specific nouns are used to create meaning interesting adjectives writing is free of wordiness Sentence Fluency sentences are clear and easy to understand shows a variety in sentence beginnings and lengths Conventions follows the basic rules of grammar follows the basic rules of spelling follows the basic rules of capitalization follows the basic rules of punctuation Name: Period: Title: A Person I Admire Type: Personal Essay Length: Multiple Paragraphs Feedback I like the way you… Writing Process Rubric Prewriting brainstorms and plans writing Rough Draft Writing uses plan to generate rough draft Revising makes revisions Editing proofreads and edits writing Publishing writing is neat and presentable

Revision Questions Ideas Does my essay have a clear focus? Have I used an effective lead? Have I used specific details, examples, and facts? Have I elaborated on details, examples, and facts? Organization Is my essay broken into effective paragraphs? Are my paragraphs connected to each other and to the subject? Do I have effective topic sentences for each paragraph? Are my body sentences organized to help create meaning? Have I used an effective closing for my essay? Voice Do I use language in an engaging way that keeps readers interested? Does my writing show that I care about the subject? Does my writing show that I am thinking about the reader? Does my writing present an appropriate level of language? (not too informal) Word Choice Do I use specific nouns? Do I use interesting adjectives? Is my writing free of wordy phrases and unnecessary words? Sentence Fluency Are my sentences complete? Are they clear and easy to understand? Did I try to vary my sentence structure?
