SOLO - Majorana - 10 Sept 2003 Rick Gaitskell SOLO Conclusions (DOE) SOudon LOw Background Counting Facility >1200 keV have achieved b/g levels of earlier DBD experiments <1200 keV dominated by residual bremsstrahlung from outer Pb Final iteration sealing 1% leak of brem around inner Pb shield PB from Collar Sept 2003 expect to be ready to start counting samples World Class Facility Sensitivity (if brem reduced by x0.1) comparable to World best Expect to be able to screen to U 50 ppt/ Th 50 ppt/ K 50 ppb (refine MC simulation) Very few systems - limited availability (Oroville LBL / Gran Sasso) Majorana / CDMSII / XENON Dark Matter experiments will directly benefit Great opportunity exploited Detectors & Shield & DAQ borrowed from old DBD assemblies (PNL) Labor from CDMSII grads + few $k of technical support Useful training experience for graduates on low background (modest) scale experiment
