Thought Journal 4-1 Developing Yourself as a Leader Why is it important for you to develop as a leader? Why is it important for you to practice and develop leadership skills now?

Importance of Personal Leadership Development Needed in all occupational areas Think of 5 jobs and write them down Now list one type of leadership needed at each one Personal leadership: ability to crystallize your thinking to establish an exact direction for your own life and follow that direction Remember: “If it’s going to be, it’s up to me.”

Becoming a Successful Leader… Study qualities of good leaders Analyze yourself- admit your strengths and weaknesses Learn to take directions Learn as much and you can about groups Make a personal leadership plan

It’s Not Easy Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King did not become great leaders overnight. While life experiences added to their success, their development as leaders took place because of careful planning.

Think of a time that you had to follow a plan. Write a 50 word journal entry that describes when/why you followed a plan and how important the plan was to the success of the activity/event.

Get a piece of paper, colored pencils/marker and draw a picture that represents where you will be in 10 years. -What you look like physically/professionally -Where you live -Your household family (who do you live with?)

Developing a Personal Leadership Plan 1.Develop a vision – why do you want to be a leader and how do you see yourself becoming one? 2.Set goals – what do you want to accomplish and how? 3.Initiative – becoming an effective leader takes hard work and careful planning 4.Self-Confidence – how do you expect others to lead and believe in you if you don’t believe in yourself.

Developing a Personal Leadership Plan; Part II 5.Personal Responsibility – if you want to see something happen or see progress in yourself or others, take the responsibility upon yourself to see that it happens 6.Self-Image – ensure that you are a leader your peers would like to look up to 7.Develop self-organization– Develop steps to accomplishing your goals. Organize them in order so you know what needs to be done next.

Developing a Personal Leadership Plan; Part III 8.Eliminate procrastination– Why put off until tomorrow what you can do today? Set a realistic time scale schedule so you know if you are completing the steps to your goals in a timely fashion. 9.Study—Learn and practice what you learn. 10.Magnifying your strengths – ID your personal strengths and use them to our advantage.
