MEFs – who & what are they? Medical Education Fellows, SpR level Est. 2005 - James Gilbert & Rosie Lusznat 45 have held post so far 16 currently appointed in Wessex Support, validation & opportunities for those with special educational interest Lead MEF role established 2010

What do we do? Champions of Medical Education Local, national & international projects Tomorrow’s Teachers faculty Many pursuing further education (PGCE Diploma / MA) in Medical Education Wide variation within group - difficult to summarise!

Developing Trainee Educators Structured pathway for junior trainees Informal mentorship programme Encourage trainees to become develop Med Ed skills & consider becoming MEF

Structured pathway Web-based guidance on how to broaden / enhance educational experience e.g. TT, ‘Lead or be Led’, Education Conf, structures for teaching sessions Available to all NOT a list of requirements / competencies

Mentorship programme Recognisable but informal programme Complement and support Ed. Supervisors Named MEF for each trainee / mentee, preferably in same trust Discussion, guidance, goal-setting

Mentorship programme NOT based on ‘competency’ or appraisal NOT for support of struggling trainees MEFs involved receive mentorship training

Expected outcomes Formalise & develop junior trainees educational skills Increase MEF numbers, experience & expertise Build stronger links with Ed. Supervisors Deanery develops stronger educational focus Regular pathway / programme evaluation

What happens next? Outline presented to DME group 20/10/11 Lots of useful feedback Proposal now undergoing review Formal approval from DME group & Ed Supervisors pending Aim to be up and running early 2012 7 trainees already registered interest
