DIRECTIONS TEXTBOOK: Pages 94-99 1.Fold the flip chart in half 2. Turn the paper so the word “Astronomy is at the top of the page 3. Open the chart and look inside

4. On the side that you can see through the page that says “Astronomy”, draw and color pictures 5. On the side that you can see through the page and see the words “Islamic Contributions” copy the facts from this PowerPoint onto the yellow paper on this side of the page 6. Ignore the directions on the actual page. This handout was photo copied upside down

ASTRONOMY Used to pray to Mecca The astrolabe was invented by Greek scientists to chart the position of the stars and to determine their location when traveling. It was improved upon by Arab scholars

GEOGRAPHY Used stars for navigation Made better maps Ibn-Battutah was a famous Muslim explorer who traveled to Africa, India, China and Spain Al-Idrisi sent out trained geographers to determine the exact location of many mts, rivers and coastlines

MEDICINE Medical encyclopedias Ibn-Sina- wrote the most famous book in the history of medicine

Philosophy A new movement called sufism = a philosophy that focuses on loving God (Allah) and having a personal relationship with him

LITERATURE Poetry influenced by Sufism Wrote “Thousand and One Nights” Stories/literature Poetry and short stories are 2 popular forms of literature

ARCHITECTURE The people paid for buildings (PATRONS) As the Muslim world grew richer, the rulers supported great works of architecture Mosques were built to look like the courtyard of Muhammad’s house
