3. Music was how the commander told his troops what to do. During the 1700s walkie talkies and two way radios did not exist. Talking and screaming was not heard during a battle. Commanders used different rhythms or songs to tell their unit to advance hold position or retreat as wale as other things.

4. The drum Major The drum Major would tell the musician what to play by waving a mace from a hill over looking the battle. Today he/she is the one who tells the musicians when to play, repeat or stop as well as where to march. During the revolutionary War the commanders would watch the battle from near by since there was not video monitoring equipment.

5. In England However Fifes were banned for an extended period of time, similar to Switzerland today. Anyone caught playing a fife would be thrown in a stockade. The fife was banned not only in public but in military as well. This started during the commonwealth and continued well after the King returned.

7. Base Drums During the 1800s the base drums were added to the military line up. These drums were designed with the same concept as the snare drums yet had a lower pitch. Most resonators today use them to complement the music of the revolutionary war. It is important to note that they did not com into play until later.

8. The Snare Drum The acoustic rope tension drum is mad up of two ends call heads. Originally made from animal skins they are made out of many things today. A wooden shell was the main body and wooden rims were the true ends. The rims we connecter to each other by rope and the sound controlled by leather called ears that either tightened or loosened the rope.

9. These Musicians Can Still be Found Today The Company of Fifers and Drummers has many member in the New England area. These members preserve the music through parades, performances and reenactments.
