Topics Covered Each half term the following Creative Curriculum topics are taught:  Tudor Explorers  Comparing Australia and Russia  The Victorians  Mayans  Tropical Rainforests  Florida Where you could help: taking your child to the library, asking them questions about what they have learnt, helping with any topic based homework which will be given out instead of normal homework once a half term.

4. Expectations! Uniform Although improving, we still are seeing children wearing trainers. Please ensure they wear smart black shoes. PE Kit  Trainers and socks  Tracksuit  Uniform shop:8.30 on Monday or 3.15 on Wednesday  Earrings - If any child is wearing earrings (which should only be single studs) either removed or covered with micro tape  Please make sure all uniform and PE kits are named.

6. English KS2 English is taught every day in English lessons as well as being taught throughout other areas of the curriculum including geography, history, science and ICT. Teaching reading and writing at every opportunity is key to helping our children achieve their best. Mrs McGuirk takes the 3 rd English group. Speaking and Listening Within the teaching of English, there are opportunities for children to develop their spoken language through drama and discussions. We believe this approach enables the children to become more confident in sharing and developing their own ideas. If children can express themselves clearly, this impacts on the quality of their writing.

7. English KS2 Reading Guided Reading – children read to the teacher in small groups, following the same book. A range of comprehension skills are covered in order for children to be fully confident in their understanding of what they are reading. We try very hard to promote a love of books and reading by having an attractive reading area and a library where children can now take out a book on a weekly basis. We encourage children to respect the books and take care of them. Children are given opportunities to discuss the books they read and make recommendations. In addition, reading at home plays such a vital part in helping children practise the reading for enjoyment,

8. English KS2 Writing Children are taught to write for a range of purposes using different text types. Sentence construction also pays a key part in developing our children’s writing so we have grammar lessons once a week followed by daily spelling and punctuation and grammar openers for the rest of our Literacy lessons. We try to make writing as interesting for the children as possible so that they enjoy the process. We are trying to encourage good presentation of all writing across all subjects. Once a week, the children have an opportunity to write independently and practise the writing skills they have been learning in class.

9. English KS2 Handwriting It is important that children form individual letters of the alphabet correctly before they learn joined up writing, which starts in year 2. From them on, children are taught handwriting using the school handwriting scheme and when ready, the children will use a black handwriting pen. Spellings Children are taught spellings on a regular basis in line with the National Curriculum and any key words for topics. Any words the children are struggling with are revised. They have a weekly spelling test.

10. English Year 5 In year 5 we learn the following text types:  Diary writing  Report Writing  Writing stories with particular focus on characters, setting and the plot line  Poetry writing focusing on personification, metaphor and simile  Persuasive writing  Writing based on short animations  Legends  Writing Newspapers Articles

11. English Year 5 Grammar and Sentence Level Writing good sentences has the biggest impact on their levels at this stage. We improve sentence structure by making sure they:  Add great adjectives, adverbs and descriptive phrases  Use connectives to extend their writing  Use a range of punctuation for effect  Use different ways of starting their sentences so it is not just “ the”, “a”, or a noun  Change the order of their sentences. Where you can help: go to the library with your child and read high quality books, talking about the language the author uses. Have a conversation with your child. Give them opportunities to write at home. Help your child learn a poem off by heart.

12. 13. Maths We split 3 ways in maths according to ability with Mr Wilkinson being the 3 rd teacher. Where you can help:  practise times tables regularly with your child  encourage them with their mental recall of addition and subtraction  when you are shopping, let they help you pay  show your child how to find the change  teach them how to tell the time  check their maths homework before they hand it in to make sure it is correct.

14. Assessment and Life Without Levels  Children are assessed against objectives which are age related expectations.  We will be working towards achieving these expectations throughout the year.  Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) are the most important objectives to achieve throughout the year.  We are assessing KPI’s by giving your child a 1(emerging), 2 (expected) or 3 (exceeding)for their knowledge and application.  We will revise KPI’s throughout the year and therefore your child can increase their given mark.  In maths we have divided the KPI’s into Autumn, Spring and Summer Terms and in English the KPI’s remain the same throughout the year.

15. Assessment and Life Without Levels  We have decided which age related band your child is working at from their level at the end of year 4.  Your child will be assessed as:  Emerging- beginning to work within the year 5 objectives  Expected- working within the year 5 objectives  Exceeding- achieved the year 5 objectives and working towards year 6 targets.  Below age-related expectations- working at a level below the year 5 objectives.
