There are many definitions of marketing but one of the simplest suggests that: "Marketing is getting the right product or service in the right quantity, to the right place, at the right time and making a profit in the process". Marketing is about identifying and understanding your customer and giving them what they want. It's not just about advertising and promoting your business.

3 Marketing vs. Advertising: What's the Difference? Many people confuse marketing with advertising. While both are important, advertising is only a single component of the marketing process. Marketing consists of: Advertising Community involvement Customer support Distribution Market research Media planning Product pricing Public relations Sales strategy The best way to distinguish the two? Think of marketing as everything an organization does to build a relationship between the company and consumer.

4 The traditional way of viewing the components of marketing is via the four Ps: 1. Product. Goods and services (creating offerings). 2. Promotion. Communication. 3. Place. Getting the product to a point at which the customer can purchase it (delivering). 4. Price. The monetary amount charged for the product (exchange). Introduced in the early 1950s, the four Ps were called the marketing mix, meaning that a marketing plan is a mix of these four components.

5 Is marketing right for you? you need to possess a combination of several personality traits and characteristics to make it in the marketing world You need to be creative and self-motivated, you have to be able to work well in a team environment, very detail oriented, a planner but also open to last minute changes You need to be a leader at times and a follower when necessary, you need to know how to stay up-to-date on trends, be optimistic, able to understand your consumer, and so on.

Essentially you will need a broad mix of skills to be successful in this industry and potential candidates need to show evidence of the following:  interpersonal skills  communication skills  numeracy and analytical ability  creativity and imagination  influencing and negotiation skills  teamwork  organizational ability  IT skills  business and commercial acumen  drive and ambition The key is to demonstrate that you have most if not all of these key skills so as to get your foot in the door.
