Media Journal How do you think a video camera can be used as both a selective and persuasive tool?

Video Camera Basics Broadcast and Video Production I
3
Selective Tool Your choice of shots creates a selective view of any situation. You create the picture. You can create a real version of the event or a false distorted version.
4
Persuasive Tool The use of a technique (focus, movement, angles, shot, etc.) can bring either a desired or undesired meaning to the picture.
5
Camera Lens All cameras have three basic types of lens to work with: Normal Wide-angle Telephoto Each lens is distinguished by the angle of coverage that it sees.
6
Normal Lens Objects in front of a normal lens are reproduced in the same size, proportion and distance as the human eye would reproduce it. The angle of coverage is approx. 25 degrees. Advantages: Gives a natural perspective. Depth of field is good. (The area that is in focus) Camera movement is natural and smooth. Disadvantages: Not enough width coverage in tight spaces.
7
Wide-Angle Provides an angle of coverage that is greater than 25 degrees. Advantages: Good for cramped areas. Makes handholding a camera easier. Depth of field is great. (The area that is in focus.) Disadvantages: Space can often be exaggerated. Can distort a subject’s features. Subjects appear smaller in the frame.
8
Telephoto Lens Produces an angle of coverage that is smaller than 25 degrees. Advantages: Distant objects brought closer. Depth of field is narrow. (The area that is in focus.) Can flatten contours. Disadvantages: Space is compressed. Camera movement is exaggerated which makes handholding a camera difficult.
9
A Steady Camera Use a tripod!!! Check to see if it is level: Use the bubble on the tripod head. Use the lines of the room to check by using the viewfinder. Avoid extending the tripod center more than a few inches.
10
Hand-held Shots Create tripod-like support with your body. Lean against a wall, pole, doorway, chair, etc. for support. Keep your elbows tucked against your side. Move from a tight position to an open position when panning (side to side).
11
Experiment Set-up the tripod Insert camera battery Insert tape Attach camera to tripod Adjust tripod height Turn camera on/off Remove Camera Eject tape
